Missions
Each JHI mission is
one week long, plus travel. Volunteers from the Diaspora cover their
own travel and visa expenses and JHI covers all ground expenses
while in the host community. While the program varies to meet the
specific needs of each community, many activities are standard.
JHI volunteers present lectures at seminars attended by healthcare
professionals from both the Jewish and secular communities, who
come from as far as 200 miles away. Lectures may also be given in
medical and nursing schools, hospitals, academies of post-graduate
education, and at programs for all ages throughout the Jewish community.
JHI volunteers screen patients in consultation with local professionals
on a one-to-one basis. Volunteers also visit homebound patients
and provide consultation to their homecare workers and physicians.
JHI also educates the mission volunteers about the work of worldwide
Jewish organizations and makes it possible for them to experience
the Jewish renewal taking place in Eastern Europe and the Former
Soviet Union. Volunteers also have the opportunity to enjoy cultural
activities while in the overseas community.
