Humanitarian Relief

Clinic SignDue to requests for services throughout the world, both sectarian and non-sectarian, JHI has expanded its mission to include a humanitarian medical relief program. We are committed to embodying the Jewish value of Tikun Olam- making the world a better place for all, which encompasses having a presence in humanitarian relief efforts and providing essential services, screening and support to underprivileged individuals in the United States and around the world.

In 2008, we partnered with the Plaquemines Medical Center in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, developing a one-day health fair which offered free health screenings for blood pressure, vision, hearing and general health related issues. Attendees were given written information on various medical issues along with advice from dentists and referrals to local providers. All screened individuals requiring further medical support were immediately referred to the Plaquemines Medical Center for follow up care.

Clinic workersWe were very pleased with the response and the general effectiveness of this one day health fair and we intend to expand its application in other cities. We also plan to develop other humanitarian medical relief programs in conjunction with local suppliers to providing free/low cost medical, vision and/or dental screening and services combined with public health education in other underprivileged communities with limited access to care. All individuals participating in the free screenings will be encouraged to participate in public health seminars focused on empowering individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices.
